3 Simple Ways to Stay True to Your Weight Loss Goals during the Holidays

holiday-dinner1. Fix a healthy dish or two for the family gathering and eat mostly from the dish(es) you prepared. You know all the ingredients, and if your dish(es) is (are) mostly veggies, you can have as many servings as you want because the calorie count for veggies (not so much beans) are very low.

2. If you are going to indulge, skip the alcohol (and juices). They are empty calories.  Instead of consuming about 4000 calories for the day, you will easily up the intake to 5000-5500 calories by consuming alcohol and other beverages.  And, yes, you will consume about that many calories if you are eating several helpings and large portions of food. It is quite easy and very possible. So just drink water.  The water will help you digest the food better anyway. 🙂

3. Prepare yourself mentally. Don’t get caught up in the food hype.  Focus on building memories with family and friends instead of looking forward to the food.  If your mind is on quality time with loved ones, the thoughts about food will be pushed further and further away from your mind. Imagine this.  Close your eyes. You are sitting at a 25 feet table in a banquet hall. Beautiful flowers, grand chandler, a silk table cloth, a beautiful view of snow capped mountains as far as the eye can see, and Food! YES, THE FOOD!!  All your favorite holiday food from one end of the table to the other. Now imagine there is no one there but you. It is so quiet.  You can hear your echo bounce off the walls even at a whisper.  You can hear the wind hollowing outside, and then there is stark silence, and you realize that it is just you! How happy are you now to indulge in the food?  If the answer is not so much, then hold on to that thought when tempted by all the food during the holidays. Learn to cherish the quality time with loved ones or yourself with God.
